The Centre For Near Life Research first took the form of a nomadic research station within contaminated waters. The Centre followed in the wake of queer theorist Eric A. Stanley’s proclimation that trans life was a “death-in-waiting,” overdetermined by the atmospheres of violence that envelop us. The Centre reclaims this negative position as a generative opening: if trans life is a death-in-waiting, what can we learn from making kin in the underworld?
In 2023 and 2024, the Centre hosted social practice workshops on xʷməm̓qʷe:m bog on unceded Musqueam territory (colonially known as Vancouver, Canada). Early outcomes were collected in the Centre for Near Lift Reader in 2023, published by Dane Press. The Centre for Near Life have been exhibited at Sprint Milano (Italy), Lago Algo (Mexcio City), Kunsthal Ghent (Belgium), the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (Japan), and MoMA PS1 (New York City).
